Sketching in China

So I moved to Beijing,

I was invited to work on the Zhang Yimou movie “The Great Wall” staring Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, ¬†Andy Lau, Pedro Pascal, Jing¬†Tian, Lu Han.

After the project, I was invited to stay at Base-FX as a Concept Artist. They have given me the chance to work on a big variety of projects, both chinese and american movies. Things have been going very quickly this last year, and I’m looking forward for more, but it didn’t give me the time to post. I will try to share more eventually!

Here is some sketch made in Beijing in 2015…

I’ll post some photos soon also!

Still alive & the X-Men

So it’s been a while since I wrote something!

Lots of stuff changed since my last post, I’ve been really busy, but here’s the work-related news:

I spent the last year working on X-Men : Days Of Future Past as a set designer, and although it took all my free time for a year, it was a real blast.

It was hard to go to the studio at that time, but the project allowed me and the rest of the team to be really creative in many ways. We had the opportunity to design in all direction: sci-fi, 70ies, an ancient monastery, etc…. (That’s why in the movie industry, we all love time travel)
Had the chance to redesign some iconic pieces of the X-men world, like the Cerebro Console.

I’ll check if I can get some pictures cleared to post them here, otherwise, it’s mostly all over the internet at that time. It’s been out for…. like 6 weeks I think? And we are really happy here that the film is a success and a good movie (those two don’t necessarily go together).

I’m currently finishing work on another movie, The Walk by Robert Zemeckis

(staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Charlotte Lebon and Sir Ben Kingsley) It tells the story of frenchman Philippe Petit that illegaly crossed on a wire the World Trade Center Twin Tower in 1974.

Too much work these days,
I’m really impatient now to go back to the studio to work on my own stuff,
but bills have to be paid (and I must say I’m lucky to work in that industry as a designer since its always fun)

Ciao.

First practice

Although work has been crazy, I had some time to enjoy the studio.
Here is two fast practice I made. You can see the progress.

The black and white one is from a youtube documentary of a war journalist following a group of soldiers during the Kosovo War. At that point, the soldier was explaining that he had spent his life working in that factory, and now his job was to defend it.

You can see the video here.

The second one is inspired by a drawing I made in a life session several weeks ago. Testing out the colors. Proportions are way off.

Which one do you like?

So far, people seem to prefer the first step of each. humph!

Ho, and here is a drawing I made at work, while waiting for my computer. It’s the famous shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.
