WHAT IF EARTH ITSELF WAS THE SPACESHIP TO ESCAPE THE DYING SUN?
The Wandering Earth (Chinese: 流浪地球) is an upcoming Chinese science fiction film directed by Frant Gwo. It is based on a story by author Liu Cixin and is set for release on February 5, 2019 (the 2019 Chinese New Year's Day).
The Hollywood Reporter describes it as "China's first full-scale interstellar spectacular".
I will give more and more details of the process as the release gets closer. The director was kind enough to allow us to show our drawings before the release, but we need to follow his rhythm of releasing information.
This was my first project as the team lead concept designer (2016).
Our contribution on this project was extensive:
from designs of the environment, machines, vehicles, structures, props, clothes,
we also designed more than 60 keyframes before moving to storyboarding almost the entire movie; more than 6000 frames in total.
Granting us with a great sign of confidence, the director came back later in 2018 to correct and redesign some elements that were added in reshoots. We then produced several quick drawings instructing the vfx on how to make the new assets.
I am extremely happy to have been part of that fantastic project, but mosly, I am extremely proud of our team for all their efforts.
